This Distinguished Teaching in Journalism Award honors a collegiate journalism educator and recognizes outstanding teaching ability, contributions to journalism, journalism education and contributions toward maintaining the highest standards of the profession.

Nomination Deadline: SPJ Ethics in Journalism Award

The Ethics in Journalism Award honors journalists or news organizations that perform in an outstanding ethical manner demonstrating the ideals of the SPJ Code of Ethics. It also honors especially notable efforts to educate the public on principles embodied in the code or hold journalists ethically accountable for their behavior. Nominations are open. Self-nomination is permitted.

Nomination Deadline: Julie Galvan Outstanding Graduate in Journalism Award

Each of the Society’s campus chapters are encouraged to select one graduate in journalism who is outstanding in his or her class on the basis of character, service to the community, scholarship, proficiency in practical journalism and significant contributions to their SPJ chapter. From this group, the Society’s leaders will select one graduate who is considered the most outstanding for national recognition.

The Outstanding Campus Chapter Adviser Award is presented annually to the person who has made an exceptional contribution to the campus chapter for which he or she serves as SPJ adviser.

Nomination Deadline: Howard S. Dubin Outstanding Pro Member Award
Apr 15 all-day

Annually, the Society salutes individual members who have made significant contributions to their SPJ chapters. The Award honors Howard Dubin who has shown outstanding membership with his service to the Society. While he contributes great sums of time, energy and money to the national Society, Mr. Dubin continues grassroots service at the chapter level.

SPJ Ethics Week

SPJ’s Code of Ethics states that ethical journalism is truthful, compassionate, independent and transparent. We need ethical journalism — and journalists who work each day with the profession’s highest standards in mind — now more than ever. The goal of Ethics Week is to not only help journalists explain how they ethically cover stories, but to share with the public information about what journalists do, how to identify ethical journalism, where to find it and how to support it.

Entry Deadline: Eugene C. Pulliam Fellowship for Editorial Writing

The Pulliam Editorial Fellowship awards $75,000 to an editorial writer to help broaden his or her journalistic horizons and knowledge of the world. Provided by the SDX Foundation, the award can be used to cover the cost of study, research and/or travel in any field.

Established by the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation, the Eugene S. Pulliam First Amendment Award recognizes, with a $10,000 award, accomplishments on behalf of First Amendment freedoms by an individual, group of individuals or an organization.
