Unfortunately, not everyone can afford a smartphone and with the best video capabilities. But you’re right–if you got the money for an Iphone, Droid or whatever is out there shooting video definitely experiment.

To me the Flip is just something that you can toss in your bag of other hardware. I also think the USB plug that flips out makes it so convenient. My smartphone doesn’t have that? Does yours?

A year ago, I would have agreed with you — in fact, I got a Flip myself last fall — but by the end of this year, every smartphone out there will shoot Flip-comparable video, and that’s a video camera you’re unlikely to ever not have with you.

For journalists who aren’t in the middle of a multi-year phone contract (or who aren’t stuck with American call phone carriers with their ridiculous plans), I’d get a current generation smartphone instead.
