Contest award re-order form & award pick-up instructions

By Dana Neuts | Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

Thanks to everyone who attended our Western Washington Pro Chapter SPJ Awards Banquet last night.  As always, it was lots of fun and we enjoyed honoring our colleagues and peers. We hope other region-wide events were just as well attended! For those of you who weren’t able to attend or whose chapters don’t host an awards night, here are instructions on making award re-orders, corrections and duplicate requests.

Award Re-Orders & Corrections (all Region 10 awards)

If you received an award that included an error, please complete this form and return it to regional director Dana Neuts by Monday, June 21. Awards will be corrected and duplicates ordered by month end and should be sent to the winners by the end of July.

[Note:  If the error was our mistake, we will make the change at our expense. However, if the error is based on your mistake (e.g., entered incorrectly in the online submission system) or you are ordering a duplicate award, the re-order will be done at your expense.]

Award Pick-up (Western Washington chapter awards only)

Certificates that are not claimed at the May 22 banquet will be mailed to the winners. Unclaimed trophies will be available in Seattle – at a location to be determined – early next week. Additional information will be posted as soon as we have selected the pick-up location. If the winner is located within 50 miles of Seattle, we will expect you to pick-up the trophy or cover the shipping expense. If you are outside a 50 mile radius of Seattle, we will ship your awards to you at our expense, unless you make other arrangements.

Award results to be posted by midnight, May 23

By Dana Neuts | Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Everyone is anxious to hear the results of the Region 10 Excellence in Journalism contest, and we’ve been getting lots of requests for more information about when winners will be posted. We’re glad you are so enthusiastic!

As in past years, we will post the winners by midnight the night of the Portland and Seattle banquets, May 22. So by 12 am on Sunday, May 23, the full list of regional winners will be posted at that time. They will be posted to Western Washington Pro Chapter’s website and passed onto other chapters who have websites. They will also be posted to the Region 10 blog.

If you have any questions, please direct them to your individual chapter presidents. Thank you and good luck!

Resurrecting the Region 10 blog

By Dana Neuts | Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

So, folks have been asking me about our  Region 10 blog. I admit I have neglected the blog this spring. With too much to juggle, something had to give and this was it…but SPJ life is returning to normal, and I am committed to keeping this blog up to date. Want to help? Send me your chapter news, events and updates so we can learn from each other and share ideas!

Here’s a brief recap of our spring so far:

- February-March:  Approximately 2,500 contest entries were submitted to the 2009 Pacific NW Excellence in Journalism Contest, and passed on to out-of-state judges at SPJ chapters around the country.

- March 1:  Regional Director reports on individual chapters were due.

- April 10:  The Western Washington Pro Chapter hosted the spring SPJ conference in Seattle. With about 150 in attendance, the conference drew about 50% students and 50% pros, a big change from the 25%/75% split usually seen. National SPJ president-elect Hagit Limor from Cincinnati attended the conference which focused on providing skills-based training. The conference also included an awards ceremony to honor student MOE winners. Regional winners will go onto compete at the national level.

- April 17:  As regional director, I attended the national SPJ board meeting in Indianapolis where I learned about SPJ’s proposed budget for the 2010-2011 year; HQ’s plans to launch its new and improved, user-friendly website complete with video training; that the joint SPJ-RTDNA 2011 conference will be held in New Orleans; and more.

- April 20:  Added a Facebook group for Region 10. Join us here.

- April 27:  The last week of April chapter presidents were given the names of contest winners to begin making announcements. The Oregon/SW Washington and Western Washington Pro chapters host a formal banquet, while the William O. Douglas chapter will honor its winners with a less formal BBQ.

Welcome to the Region 10 blog!

By Dana Neuts | Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Welcome to SPJ’s Region 10 blog, called The X Factor (for now). The purpose of this blog will be to share news, regional contest updates, training opportunities and ideas for SPJ members in Region 10 (Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana). If your chapter resides in one of these states and you have information to share with the region, please send it to me via email and I’ll be happy to post it for you. I also welcome your comments to my posts and would love suggestions for a new name.

I look forward to working with you!
