Attacks on CNN-IBN in India
Congratulations to journalists in India, especially those in Mumbai, who rallied behind CNN-IBN when the TV station’s studios in Mumbai and Pune were attacked recently.
According to news reports, 10-15 supporters of the Shiva Sena political party entered the TV station’s studios in Mumbai and Pune on Nov. 20 and broke computers, furniture and cameras. They also damaged a van and destroyed glass doors. They were upset over the TV station’s news coverage that put the party’s leader, Balasaheb Thackeray, in bad light.
Such intimidation tactics to silence the media are deplorable.
Ironically, Thackeray is a journalist-turned-politician. He still runs a local language publication.
As the news of the attack spread, other journalists in Mumbai staged a rally to show their solidarity with the TV station’s staff.
The TV station’s editor in chief Rajdeep Sardesai and his staff are to be lauded for their fearless reporting.
