Facebook Blocked in Vietnam

The BBC is reporting that access to the social networking site Facebook is being blocked in Vietnam.

According to the report, Vietnam’s Internet service provider says it is working to fix the problem. However, employees at some web firms say the government ordered them to block access to Facebook.

This is just the latest set of online troubles in the country. The Committee to Protect Journalists reported in early September that  online journalists and bloggers had been arrested and harassed for their independent reporting. As a result, many of them moved their blogs to Facebook and other social networking sites.

Unfortunately I live in Vietnam. I use Facebook only on rare occasions because I have no enough time for this, but for my wife it was very useful for keeping contacts with her (and our) friends. I say “was” because we can not use it anymore. Vietnam’s Internet service providers can say anything, but the truth is that access to Facebook is blocked as well as the access to many other sites.

Throughout the last two weeks i haven’t lost connection to Facebook. Maybe this has just been technical issues after all.

It is not known whether the problem is a technical issue or the censorship from the government. However, we can still keep in touch with our friends on Facebook by using a proxy.
