Mass Layoffs at Indonesian Newspaper

By Butler Cain

The Jakarta Post reported this weekend that 144 employees at the Berita Kota newspaper have been fired.

It happened after the newspaper’s publisher was purchased by a subsidiary of Kompas Gramedia Group.

Indonesia’s Independent Journalists Alliance (AJI) is obviously concerned about this move and is asking the newspaper’s new corporate owner to “fulfill their workers’ rights as regulated by the law.”
