Love the idea of National Freelance Writers Appreciation Week - thanks for the reminder that it happens this year. I think I'll use it to up my writing output for the week and thank my clients for their business, just to turn things around a bit.

Belonging to organizations like SPJ! But also: not subscribing to the daily newspaper, so you have to get out of the house every day to read it (well, if you still prefer to read the paper on paper); living in an apartment building and getting to know your neighbors, and/or an urban neighborhood with shops and restaurants in easy walking distance; having a dog, so you really do have to get out of the house at least once a day; joining and going to meetings of professional organizations, book clubs, hobby groups, etc. (and starting one if there aren't any nearby); joining a church, synagogue; volunteering for a cause you care about, etc.

Coping with isolation really isn't that difficult, especially in the current electronic world. The trick is usually to be proactive, rather than sitting back and waiting for people and activities to come to you.

When I first started writing, I made less than a penny a word. At the time, I didn't realize that I could get more. I thought that everybody paid a couple bucks for an article or blog.

I made a full-time income writing these articles. As a single mom, I did what I had to do. It's possible to write 10,000 words a day without sacrificing quality. I worked early in the morning, took the rest of the day off with my kids, and then put in 4 more hours. That gave my brain a nice break.

I'd never do it again unless every other gig that I currently have falls through. I still know a few moms who write 20 articles a day, though. They are good writers who don't have any other way to provide for their kids at the moment.

Michael, in most cases, I agree that writers and journalists should not write for free. However, if a writer or journalist is getting something out of the relationship, I still think it is worthwhile, even when cold hard cash is not exchanged. For example, if the writer is getting a great clip or exposure, it might be worth it to write for free. Obviously, we can't write everything for free or we'd be living in cardboard boxes and eating pork and beans every night, but once in awhile, I think writing for free makes sense.
