It started with an email.
A year ago this week, I began the process of getting a community together on social media and digital journalism. That community would become SPJ Digital, which began its work in July and would be approved by the Board of Directors at their call in August. It would become the second community in a network committed to serve the industry it loves, and the people who work in it. Continue reading
Several years ago, under the leadership of John Ensslin, Sonny Albarado and David Cuillier, an idea was born – well, borrowed actually – to create communities within SPJ. Borrowing the idea from another organization, we created communities to serve SPJ members in a new way. I had the privilege of being part of the first community, the Freelance Community, as it transformed from a committee into a community.
Initially, the difference between committees and communities seems like semantics, but there are distinct differences that make communities a useful tool for SPJ. Continue reading
